Studio Photography FAQ: Everything You Wanted to Know

Booking a studio photography session can feel like a mystery if you've never done it before. What should you wear? How long does it take? What happens if your toddler melts down halfway through? As working photographers who spend every day in the studio, we've heard just about every question out there—so we've rounded up the most common ones and answered them all in one place.

What Exactly Is Studio Photography?

Studio photography simply means your session takes place in a controlled indoor environment rather than outdoors. Instead of relying on the weather, natural light, or a random park backdrop, everything—the lighting, the background, the temperature—is managed deliberately. This gives us consistent, flattering results and lets us schedule sessions any time of year, even in the middle of a Wisconsin winter or on a rainy afternoon. It's especially popular for newborn sessions, milestone portraits, and family photos where you want a clean, timeless look.

What Should We Wear to a Studio Session?

Wardrobe is the question we get most often, and the good news is that simple usually wins. Because the studio background is typically neutral, your clothing becomes the main source of color and personality in the image. A few guidelines we share with every client:

  • Stick to solid colors or subtle patterns; busy prints and logos tend to distract from faces.
  • Choose a color palette of two or three complementary tones rather than everyone matching exactly.
  • Avoid neon shades, which can cast color onto skin in studio lighting.
  • Bring layers, cardigans, or accessories—these give variety without requiring multiple full outfits.
  • Dress for comfort, especially kids; a fussy child in an itchy outfit makes for tough photos.

If your session includes multiple setups, we're happy to help you plan outfits in advance so each look photographs well.

How Long Does a Session Take, and What's the Schedule?

Session length varies by type. A newborn session typically runs longer—often two to three hours—because we work around feeding, soothing, and diaper changes. Family and milestone sessions are usually shorter, often under an hour, since there's less setup and littler ones stay engaged for a shorter window. When you book, we'll give you an arrival time and a rough structure for the session so you know what to expect. It helps to arrive a few minutes early with everyone fed and dressed, and to build in buffer time for traffic or parking so no one starts the session stressed.

What About Newborn Sessions Specifically?

Newborn sessions deserve their own notes. We recommend scheduling within the first couple of weeks after birth, when babies are sleepiest and easiest to pose. The studio is kept warm for the baby's comfort, and we plan plenty of breaks for feeding and cuddling. Parents don't need to bring much—diapers, a pacifier if you use one, and a bottle or feeding plan are usually enough. Props, wraps, blankets, and headbands are provided, though you're always welcome to bring a meaningful item from home.

What Happens After the Session?

Once your session wraps, the images go through our editing process, where we fine-tune color, exposure, and retouching. You'll then receive a gallery to review and choose your favorites. Delivery times vary by session type, but you'll always know the timeline before your shoot. From there, you can order prints, albums, or digital files depending on the package you selected. We always recommend printing your favorites—files on a hard drive are easy to lose, but a framed portrait on the wall gets enjoyed every day.

Final Thoughts: How Do We Get the Best Results?

The secret to a great studio session is preparation plus flexibility. Communicate with your photographer beforehand about your goals, any must-have shots, and your family's quirks. Come rested and fed, keep expectations realistic with young children, and trust the process—even a chaotic moment can turn into a candid shot you'll treasure. Studios exist to make photography easier and more consistent, so relax and let the controlled environment work for you. If you have a question we didn't cover, just ask before your session; we'd rather answer everything in advance so you can walk in feeling confident and walk out with images you love.
