2018 Granite Games
A few weeks back, I received a Facebook phone call (bet you didn’t know that was a thing) from my cousin Andrew. In complete honesty, I thought I had accidentally called him so I quickly hit the hang up button… sorry Andrew. Thank goodness we ended up connecting shortly after because I was able to fill in last minute at CrossFit Appleton for their 2018 Granite Games! The stars aligned and I was out the door within the hour for a full day of competitions and amazing camaraderie.
I have never been around anything CrossFit related before, so this day was quite fun for me to photograph. The moment I stepped into the event I could feel the passion these individuals put into their accomplishments. It definitely didn’t feel like a competition between athletes though, it felt more like a competition between yesterday and today. Be better today than you were yesterday… and cheer the same affirmations for your neighboring competitor.
As a photographer, telling a story with my images is my first goal. And as many of you reading this have probably gathered from visiting any of my social media accounts, family is usually the main character of my stories. Nothing different crossed my mind for this event. This group is very clearly all family, supporting and wanting the best for each other. Even if that meant wiping up someone else’s sweat time and time again all day long to keep the competition rolling.
The number of images in this blog is more than my norm. But if you’re wanting even more, check out CrossFit Appleton’s Facebook Page. The whole gallery of gritty faces and exhausted bodies is there for you to enjoy.
